Today's Sightings

The goth girl. I had heard tell of her but hadn't seen her for myself until today. She's about 11 years old and was wearing black leggings, a black t-shirt with white words on it that I couldn't read from where I was, and a large black sun hat.

She was walking the yappy little dog, but with her it was very well behaved and didn't make a peep.

Before going out I told myself I wasn't going to photograph any more poppies since I already have so many I've taken. However, a fresh, new bloom was literally lying across the path I was taking. Fine, I will photograph you. It really was a gorgeous blossom. Most of them are pretty beat up at this point. This year was spectacular for them in the yard with a great many blooming. Much more than past years.

The dogwood blooms were also very cool.

Near the top of the street, I heard a hose running. They must be watering. Rosco's probably inside then. I proceeded with confidence for a few strides and then was startled by barking.

Rosco was clearly out somewhere and I soon spotted him. He was standing on a table that was part of a portable outdoor shower rig. Bath time.

I was relieved two people were with him on either side. His owner was reassuring Rosco that it was OK and I was just walking by. I really did not want a wet dog charging at me. Fortunately he seemed content to stay where he was and didn't seem to be trying to leap free.

I was just thrown because I couldn't place his bark. Sometimes it means, "Hey, talk to me, not them!" if I happen to chat with his owners. Other times, it's "Hello!"

This time either he didn't recognize me or maybe it was, "Hey, I can't play right now. They insist I do this bathing thing on occasion. Come back when I'm done!"

Also sighted: really pretty purple irises, purple petunias, lavender verbena, chenille plant (it looks fuzzy), and 2 different "Congratulations Grad" balloons that still had some lift tied to a mailbox.

Old Rock

So, I was out to dinner with my parents at Chili's. It was loud but I could make out a steady stream of what pains me to describe as old rock.

A new song came on. Blondie, I thought to myself, narrowing it down, but I couldn't pull up the name of the song. I was waiting for the chorus or some musical phrase that would help me place it when Mom said, "Heart of Glass."

"Yes!" I exclaimed. "Brava! Well done."

I hadn't mentioned I was listening or trying to place it, so her unbidden declaration was a delight.

Supergirl, Volume 4: Plain Sight

Supergirl, Volume 4: Plain Sight18. Supergirl, Volume 4: Plain Sight by Steve Orlando

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

2.5 stars. Relied too much on footnotes to past volumes for my taste, but I give it an extra half star for having the first non-binary character I've come across in something I've read.

Alternative Covers

"I looked at your book while I was waiting for your father at the hardware store," Mom said.

Book? Oh, the graphic novel you took back to the library for me.

"It had these alternative covers in the back. What did they call them? It was something else...I can't think of the word."

"Variant covers," I said.

"Yes! Variant," she repeated. "My favorite had this cat girl sitting and surrounded by cats with a green wood nymph."

I knew the cover she meant because I had really liked it too. Her description amused me as it was pretty accurate. "Catwoman," I identified, "and Poison Ivy."

I explained why there were other covers in the back and a little about who the characters are, but she wasn't really interested. She had just liked the art.

"If I had to pick a more 'adult' cover, I'd go with the one where they're all leaning over a building edge with a gargoyle above them," she said.

I could kind of picture it but I didn't remember that cover as well since it'd been a week since I'd read it.

Still, it pleased me that to pass some time she choose to look at something I'd chosen to read.

Barbecue Themes

Mom said, "Texas knows how to do it right. Their high schools have barbecue themes."

I was puzzled and said, "For what? Graduation?"

"No, like you have soccer teams and baseball teams, they have barbecue teams," she said.

"Oh, that's cool," I said, "I thought you said 'themes' not 'teams.'"

"Texas women are really smart."

Again I was a little confused and tried to suss out the logic but she continued, "They get the men to do the cooking."

Ah, got it.

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, Volume 3: Full Circle

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, Volume 3: Full Circle17. Batgirl and the Birds of Prey, Volume 3: Full Circle by Julie Benson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Really enjoyed it. A good finish to the overarching story that spans volumes 1 to 3.

Also best many character mashup issues I've read. Usually when there are a ton of superheroes or villains I find the story unsatisfying, but this volume includes an issue or 2 where it's done really well.
