Rusty and Sharon

Have you been watching Major Crimes?

I wasn't sure if I'd like the spinoff to The Closer, but Mary McDonnell quickly won me over to the revised premise.

SPOILERS AHEAD if you haven't been watching it.

I also wasn't sure how I felt about Rusty being a regular character, but I really like how his storyline has evolved with Sharon and the rest of the Major Crimes squad. If you want to see some stellar acting, just watch a scene between Mary McDonnell and Graham Patrick Martin.

What I love is that Sharon is absolutely on Rusty's side, even when he lashes out at her. Sharon is there for Rusty in a way Brenda never could have been. Or most people, for that matter.

Over the course of the season, we see how Sharon's stability and reliability create safety and trust for Rusty. She can't control everything, so it's not perfect, but she's always in his corner. Having that sort of advocate in your life is very appealing.

And seriously, Mary McDonnell is great in this role. You can see the layers of thoughts running through her character's mind as other people speak. I'm just sad there's only one more episode left this season.

  1. I am totally with you on Sharon and Rusty. Wasn't sure how I'd like either of them but they've both won me over in a big way. But the thing I like most about Major Crimes is that the show has allowed characters like Tao, Buzz, and especially Sanchez (my personal favorite character from both series) to have bigger roles. The Closer was all about Brenda Leigh, Pope, and Fritz with lesser emphasis on Gabriel and then the goofy antics of Flynn and Provenza. Tao, Buzz and Sanchez really got the short end of the stick on that. But now they've all been playing much bigger roles and I love it.

    1. I enjoy seeing the rest of the team more too. And *not* seeing Pope, Gabriel, and Taylor (at least not as much in Taylor's case). I was tired of all the inter-office politics by the end of The Closer.

  2. There's only one more left? Boo! We like this show a lot even though sometimes I do miss Brenda.

    1. Pretty sure they said next week is the finale. But! in good news, it's already been renewed for another season.

Does kill me though, I tend to like the summer shows better than the standard season nowadays.

  3. Yup, this week was the season finale and it was a beautiful episode. "You've ruined my life." "GOOD."

I'm just upset that I have to wait until next summer for more. I was really hoping it would be a split season with some episodes this winter. Oh well.

    1. When Rusty said, "Good!" I was all Yeah!

I'm sad we'll have to wait until next summer too. But, on the upside, this season ran later than the summer block of eps usually would. So that's something.
