Begin anyway

Before I address my theme for 2009, I want to back up to December 2008. I discovered something unexpected last month. Despite the fact that I hate asking anyone for anything (aside from familial gift givers around my bday or xmas), I asked 3 people for help. It was out of necessity, and I wasn't sure any of them would say yes; one was an absolute long shot.

But they did. They all said yes.

Fear of rejection or condescension can become so constraining that making even the smallest request becomes an ordeal. The experience highlighted the illogical weight I attribute to asking for help. Have more faith, kid.

And now to themes:
2007 was Engage
2008 was The Sleeper Must Awaken
and 2009's guiding philosophy: Begin anyway

I know it sounds similar to 2008's. I could easily use Engage or The Sleeper Must Awaken again; I made progress with each, but I want a principle that will give me a new approach this year.

There's a Welsh proverb I've long felt affinity for:
Deuparth gwaith ei ddechrau. (Beginning is two-thirds of the work.)

I have a tendency of late to wait for certain conditions before embarking on... whatever. I wait for inspiration before I write, paint, build. I wait for certain things to fall into place before I move which is not without wisdom based on my experiences, but the falling into place isn't going to happen of its own accord. I wait to be in the mood to play guitar, write songs, exercise.
Gurney Halleck: Shield Practice.
Paul: Gurney, we had practice this morning. I'm not in the mood.
Gurney Halleck: Not in the mood? Mood's a thing for cattle and love play, not fighting!
Paul: I'm sorry Gurney.
Gurney Halleck: Not sorry enough.
Sometimes waiting is unavoidable, but I need to keep setting up opportunities while I wait for others to come through.

2009: Begin anyway.

  1. Beginning is two-thirds of the work. I like that. It works for me. And seems very appropriate.

  3. If you're not going to use The Sleeper Must Awaken then I may grab it up. I love Dune.

  4. oh i hate that dread of feeling like your request for help will go unanswered, too. i hope i never have to call 911. i'll probably hit the first two digits and convince myself they'll reply they're too busy.

  5. I love the new theme. I find myself waiting for things to happen sometimes... I just need to live. I think if things are meant to happen, they will happen.

Sorry I'm not making much sense.

  6. brandon: The one of the 3 I thought most likely to say yes took a couple weeks to get back to me which was fine, but I had to use all my reserves of patience to wait for his answer.

As for 911, I think it'd be even worse to actually get a busy signal. I hope none of us ever needs 911 services.

kilax: thanks! I get what you're saying. I just think you have to do your part to make things happen as well.

  7. Oh, I'm so into this theme! Seriously, words to live by. It involves work but also faith (that starting will lead to finishing) and humility (that you can and should do stuff even if the conditions aren't perfect). I hope it leads to all sorts of greatness in 2009!

  8. Cheryl, that's exactly it. Thanks for the comment, it was a well-timed boost for me yesterday.
