Life of Art SitRep #451 Vote Them Out

The Republicans rush to confirm Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court with a complete disregard for lies he has told, information withheld, sexual assault allegations, and an unhinged partisan display is a disgrace to the highest court in our land and our nation in general.

Their haste is a case on the docket that has "the potential to dramatically increase the power of the presidential pardon" AKA Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation may be how every Trump associate permanently avoids prosecution.

I can't stand this so I created two Vote Them Out designs and collections:

I also continued creating Red Black Buffalo Plaid Lumberjack Pattern items including wrapping supplies and home decor:

Black Magick, Vol. 2: Awakening II

Black Magick, Vol. 2: Awakening II38. Black Magick, Vol. 2: Awakening II by Greg Rucka

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

So the numbering on the actual book says it's volume 002 which only makes me want Image Comics to know that I want 100 volumes of this at least!

Nicola Scott's art continues to be beyond gorgeous and Greg Rucka's story is an engaging occult crime story.

We get more backstory on Rowan and learn a bit more about her enemies, both real and perceived. The chess pieces are moving along the board.

I loved it and can't wait to see what happens next.

The Legend of Korra: The Art of the Animated Series Book One: Air

The Legend of Korra: The Art of the Animated Series Book One: Air32. The Legend of Korra: The Art of the Animated Series Book One: Air by Michael Dante DiMartino

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Beautiful book which gives insights into the creation of the animated series The Legend of Korra. I love all the background paintings done mainly by two artists. The characters and vehicles are done by a much larger group of people.

It's really an amazing collaborative art project by so many people with different strengths put to their best uses. Very cool.

Life of Art SitRep #447 A Week in Review

Went to an outdoor sculpture exhibit. Mostly kinetic sculptures but it was dead calm. Most of them looked so heavy though that it seemed like it would take gale force winds to move them. Enjoyed it nonetheless.

Shot 121 photos, culled 46. Rated rest. My dad came up with a rig that makes my old camera shootable again, huzzah! I should've let him try a couple months ago. Ah well.

Did a variety of behind the scenes work on my store, Rocklawn Arts.

Created a Monogram Black White Plaid Printed Return Address Envelope. It features a custom initial in a box on the front, customizable return address on the back flap, and a black and white gingham plaid printed inside:

The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Part One

The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Part One (Turf Wars #1)30. The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Part One by Michael Dante DiMartino

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This story picks up directly after the animated series The Legend of Korra ends. It's like watching the next episode, so if you're not already familiar with the characters, elemental bending, and setting, I'd recommend watching those first. There's a lot of back story that develops over the series that is not rehashed in this book.

What I love about the book is that the bond I saw growing between Asami and Korra on the TV show actually pays off. I'm so accustomed to queer storylines remaining forever subtext that to see this one become main text feels amazing.

The writer DiMartino is one of the co-creators of The Legend of Korra and this is the official continuation of the series which also validates it as canon.

Thumbs way up! I can't wait to read the next one.

Life of Art SitRep #446 Add Your Company Logo

OK, I have to start by saying I shot 126 photographs this week and it turned out to be 2 months to the day since I'd last shot. The old camera I'd been using is kind of busted, enough to make it a super pain to use, so I haven't been shooting.

I researched cameras for ages and the few contenders were all long overdue for a refresh, so I've been patiently waiting to see what Photokina will bring in September.

Anyway, I borrowed a camera and it was good to shoot again.

Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules

Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules (Delilah Dirk #3)29. Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules by Tony Cliff

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another rollicking adventure with Delilah Dirk. This one includes settings of ancient civilizations. The ruins Cliff has drawn are delightful!

A real treat. Highly recommended. I love all the ruins and Mediterranean vistas, and, of course, DD's swashbuckling & Selim's curiosity/sleuthing.

Spine: The Jud Fine art plan at the Maguire Gardens, Central Library, Los Angeles

Spine: The Jud Fine art plan at the Maguire Gardens, Central Library, Los Angeles28. Spine: The Jud Fine art plan at the Maguire Gardens, Central Library, Los Angeles by Jud Fine and Harry Reese

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book describes the research and planning that went into Jud Fine's art installation at the Maguire Gardens. The stairs, pools, and fountains trace the evolution of recorded knowledge from cave signs to pictographs to hieroglyphs, mathematics, music, languages nearly lost to those we'd recognize today.

There's a map of the world in one section and the places marked on it are libraries that were destroyed. The book lists them all with the circumstances and year as much as they're known. It's heartbreaking. But pieces survive, collections are rebuilt or started anew.

The pools trace evolution and the grotto, the evolution of civil liberties.

It is a beautiful, well researched, celebration of knowledge throughout recorded history and across the world.

A little backstory: I didn't know what this book was until I pulled it off a shelf. Its title "Spine" had been catching my eye for quite a while. I thought maybe it was a book of photographs of skeletons or... I really didn't know. The book was more fulfilling and enriching than I'd ever guessed it might be. Highly recommended!
