Owls really are nocturnal

It was after 2:30 last night. I'd shut off the light, climbed into bed, closed my eyes. And then I heard an owl. So as not to be mistaken for something else, it hooted again. And again, and again. Eventually, it got what I think was a reply. There was an exchange and then the hooting receded as they flew somewhere else. Just as well, I hadn't really wanted to be up that late in the first place.

  1. There used to be an owl that sat in the crabapple tree outside my apartment all the time at night. It didn't have what I would call a normal hoot. It gave this ridiculously looooong hoot that sounded like, "Hoo-hoo-hoo-HOOOOOOO-hoo-hoo-hoo-oooooooo!" and, after a few times each evening, that bird gave me the giggles so bad, I couldn't sleep until it stopped. It was the joke owl. :-)
