Most days...

I just want a sink that's high enough so I don't have to bend over when I'm washing my hands.

What standard-sized item or feature would you change if you were designing your ideal living space?

  1. I want a sink that doesn't require me to bend at such an odd angle. Are any of them set at the proper height? It's not like I'm a weird size, I'm 5'7".

  2. What's the "proper height"? They all seem to be pretty standard and therefore low, presumably to accomodate kids and shorter people.

  3. I would say that the proper height is one that does not only accomodate the lowest common denominator. Perhaps a redefinition of 'average'?

  4. a friend of mine is from an entire family of absurdly tall people. his sister is the shortest at 6'2. their parents designed and built the house to accomodate their tallness ... from counter tops to doorways and doorknobs to shower heads to even the power outlets being raised on the wall. i'm only 5'10 but the house worked for me. add an eight slot toaster and we're golden.

  6. A bathroom mirror or a shower nozzle I can use without bending my neck. A counter top I can cut vegetables on without aching forearms five minutes later. Then again, I'm 6'6", so I'll probably have to be rich before I can pull that off.

  7. I'd like a catering-style kitchen - 30-second dishwasher, sink with shower head, huge range, walk-in fridge, etc, etc.

What I'd like on the house is a big set of barn doors at the front to make bringing furniture in and out easier.

And maybe to park the car in.

  8. Hyperion: maybe you can get something to raise up your cutting board in the meantime.

Sam: Way to think big. That's the way to do it. :)
